Theo Hicks - Director
Theo Hicks has been with Circle City Sound for the past five years and has served as a voice lesson instructor, assistant director, and CCS University coordinator since joining. He was hired as the full time musical director in January 2015. Having been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) for 13 years, he has sung in numerous choruses and quartets since joining, and currently sings in Instant Classic, the 2015 International Quartet Champions.
Theo has enjoyed serving as a guest clinician and conductor for numerous Youth in Harmony Events and Harmony Explosion Camps all over the country, and has also served as a guest clinician and instructor for barbershop programs around the world, most recently as a guest instructor for the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) Director’s Academy, where he collaborated with directors from all over the United Kingdom. He has also enjoyed being on the faculty of Harmony University for the past two years, teaching Music Theory, Vocal Techniques, Vocal Health & Hygiene, and coaching several ensembles.
Theo earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education at Anderson University in 2010, where he received several honors, including initiation in Pi Kappa Lambda, the Excellence in Music Education Award, and the Faculty Award for Excellence in Music, and graduated Cum Laude with Music Honors. He was the recipient of the Theodore Presser Scholarship and also the Zachary Novak Memorial Scholarship. He also won the Concerto-Aria Composition Award for best composition of a choral work. He is still an active composer and arranger, and has arranged several songs in the barbershop style for choruses and quartets around the world. Theo is currently the Choral and Drama Director at Madison-Grant Jr./Sr. High School in Fairmount, Indiana and holds membership in the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA), and has been a participant of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). He lives in Noblesville. Indiana, with his wife, Laura, who is also a music educator in the Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation in Fishers, Indiana.
David Zimmerman - Assistant Director
David grew up in Centerville, Indiana and began singing barbershop as a freshman at Centerville High School. He later met Kyle Kitzmiller during his sophomore year of college and began singing in the quartet, Instant Classic, with Kyle, Theo Hicks, and Kyle's brother Kohl.
David attended Ball State University in 2006 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 2010. He is currently the Vocal Music Director at Pike Township's Lincoln Middle School in Indianapolis. He has experience teaching and conducting ensembles at the elementary, middle school, and high school level all over the state of Indiana. He is also the Youth in Harmony Director for the Cardinal District, helping to organize camps and activities designed to introduce youth to barbershop harmony.
David is a performer, arranger, and coach for barbershop quartets and choruses. He currently sings with the Instant Classic quartet. Since its formation, the group has performed at many venues across the United States and Canada and achieved Silver Medal status in the Collegiate Quartet competition (2012), was the eighth place finalist in the regular Quartet contest (2014) and won the gold in the 2015 contest. David joined Circle City Sound in late 2010.
